About the South of France

One of the most popular holiday regions in France, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region covers Provence to the mediterranean coast of France, including the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur).

This area borders with Italy on the east, and it is easy to drive over and spend a few days camping in Italy. You’ll also find the French/Italian Alps in the northern parts of this area, and if you’d like to know more visit our page on The Alps.

In the south of France the weather is typically sunny and dry during the summer months and travelling by campervan is definitely the best way to see this stunning part of France. Don’t worry, each of our campervans have air conditioning!

It’s worth planning your trip to Provence carefully. There’s so much to see and do.

Provence

From the last week of June to the end of August, Provence is covered in rolling hills of lavender fields. The peak bloom is mid July, depending on rainfall. The lavender fields stretch all the way through the Luberon to the spectacular Mediterranean coast. It’s a site that should be seen and savoured.

Provence is still a stunning area if you decide to miss the months of the lavender. Come to camp when the weather is cooler and the crowds are smaller. Known for sumptuous cuisine, Provence is a great place to holiday with family and friends.

The Bonfire Vans office is located close to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence - one of the oldest towns in France.

From there it’s easy to get to the most beautiful and interesting places Provence has to offer. As well as to the famous French Riviera on the south coast.

Côte d’Azur (French Riviera)

The French Riviera (known in French as the Côte d'Azur literally translating to the Blue Coast) is the beautiful coastline in the southeast corner of France.

There are some well known and very glamorous beach resorts situated here such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes, and the independent microstate of Monaco. If you look hard you will still find some very nice, affordable spots that you can camp at to explore the region.

Marseille is a port city in southern France, on the Mediterranean coast. The city is beautiful, with lots to discover if you decide to stay local to Marseille with your campervan hire.

Other lovely places, adored by Bonfire Vans are: Carrières de Lumières in Les-Baux-de-Provence. In Nice we love Castle Hill and the old town. And a must visit is the picture-postcard town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
